Door-to-door scammers are something to always be aware of and sometimes scammers can be disguised as a representative of your alarm monitoring provider. Here are some easy signs to help tell if the person knocking at your door is legitimate:
- Are they wearing a company uniform/logo?
- Does their vehicle display a company logo?
- Do they refuse to offer a photo ID or business card?
- Are they pressuring you to pay in cash or for credit card info?
- Do they become irritated or brush off your claims that question their authenticity?
If you are uncertain about the person who has approached your home, be mindful about revealing as little personal information as possible and refuse them entry to your home. Chances are that they may be there to scope out your home or to disable your current alarm system in order to gain entry later when the home is empty.
Scammers may try earning your trust by claiming to offer a free upgrade or limited time offer, pressuring you with a time constraint to get your information then and there. They may also claim to be a representative of a company that bought-out your provider or that your service is no longer available. Again, if this does not feel legitimate to you, deny the person entry. Be sure to also report the incident to your provider, local law enforcement and your neighbors, friends and family.
